Jom Makan was proud to be part of Malaysia Night 2010 at Trafalgar Square on Friday night. With the first really cold autumn weather we kept the hungry crowds warm with plenty of teh tarik and the tasting menu was a great success! Jom Makan at Malaysia Night

Come and visit the Jom Makan stall at Malaysia Night in Trafalgar Square tonight (Friday 24th September) from 3-10pm, an authentic Malaysian night hawker market with stage performances, a tea lounge and a chance to buy Malaysian ingredients, arts and crafts. Taster dishes available for £3, full dishes for £5 – our delicious Rendang Ayam (Malaysian chicken curry) is on the menu alongside other classics such as Mee Goreng Sayur.

Ramadan at Jom Makan

Ramadan, the ninth month in Islam’s lunar calendar, is a time of religious reflection, prayer, and fasting. From 11 August to 9 September 2010, Jom Makan will be celebrating the end of each day’s fast with a complimentary ‘pick-me-up’ offering of dates and sirap (rose flavoured syrup with water) for those breaking their fast.

The tradition of eating dates during Ramadan, in order to break the fast at the end of each day, spans the course of history back to the time of the Prophet Mohammed, and is noted in various religious texts and literature. It is widely believed that Mohammed would customarily end his own fast with dates and water, and therefore, dates hold a high degree of spiritual significance for people of Muslim faith.

Dates are an excellent source of fibre, natural sugar, iron, magnesium and potassium (vital in preventing dehydration), which will aid the body in maintaining health. The fibre and carbohydrates found in dates also make the fruit a slower digesting food, and therefore a good source of long lasting energy!

Jom Makan offers a wide range of traditional and fusion Malaysian cuisine, and with all meat dishes being halal, makes for an ideal venue to celebrate Ramadan.

Jom Makan Westfield – Malaysia Kitchen Launch

We were honoured to welcome Hon. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education of Malaysia on his first official visit to London to preside over the launch of Malaysia Kitchen London 2010 – an initiative from the Malaysian Government to promote Malaysian cuisine in London and the UK.

Other VIP guests supporting the launch included Michelin starred chefs Gordon Ramsay, Angela Hartnett, Jason Atherton, Stuart Gillies, Shane Osborn, Atul Kochhar and Claud Bosi plus noted restaurant critic Fay Maschler.

Jom Makan is proud to support the Malaysia Kitchen campaign which will be overseen by the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) in collaboration with Sauce Communications and whynot!

‘Mains make the trip more than worthwhile.  The kari kambing (£8.20) is a thick, viscous bowl of lamb curry which boasts breathtaking flavours through the inclusion of black cardamom seeds, star anise and whole cinnamon sticks.  You are left with a potent aniseed aftertaste that works wonderfully well with the fragrant rice and succulent chunks of lamb…….. Jom Makan strikes again.’
